DigitalOcean is cloud infrastructure that a developer can understand in an afternoon. Droplets, managed databases, Kubernetes and object storage, without the sprawling complexity of the hyperscalers.
What it does well
Clarity. Pricing is predictable, the control panel is legible, and the documentation is the best in the industry by a wide margin. A large share of the internet's server tutorials are DigitalOcean community articles, which means whatever you are trying to do, someone has already written the guide.
Provisioning is fast, the API is clean, and managed databases remove the part of infrastructure most developers least want to own.
What it costs
Droplets start around $4 a month and scale predictably. Managed databases, load balancers and Kubernetes control planes each add a clear line item. Bandwidth is generously included compared with AWS, where egress is where the surprise arrives.
Where it falls short
It is unmanaged. There is no cPanel, no one-click WordPress with support behind it, and if the server breaks at 2am that is your problem. The service catalogue is far smaller than AWS or Google Cloud, which is the point but becomes a limit as requirements grow.
Who it's for
Developers, DevOps engineers and technical founders who want control without a certification. If you want to click a button and have a WordPress site appear with support attached, buy managed hosting instead.
