HostGator is mass-market shared hosting with heavy brand recognition and pricing built around long prepayment terms.
What it does well
It is simple and it is everywhere. cPanel, one-click WordPress, unmetered bandwidth on shared plans and a 45-day money-back window that is longer than most. For someone launching a first website with no technical background, nothing here is confusing.
Uptime on shared plans is respectable, and the free domain on annual terms takes one decision off the list.
What it costs
Intro pricing runs a few dollars a month on multi-year terms, renewing at roughly two to three times that. The upsell flow at checkout is aggressive and several boxes are pre-ticked, so read the cart before paying.
Where it falls short
Performance is average and does not improve much on higher shared tiers. Support has become slower and more scripted over the years, a common pattern after acquisition. Resource limits on shared plans are enforced more tightly than the word unmetered suggests.
Technical users generally find it frustrating rather than bad.
Who it's for
Beginners who want a familiar name, cPanel and a low entry price, and who will not outgrow shared hosting soon. Developers and performance-sensitive sites should start elsewhere.
